The two products at a glance

WhatsApp offers a free downloadable Business App and the programmatic Business API. They share the WhatsApp network but solve very different problems.

Choose the Business App if…

  • You're a solo owner or a very small team.
  • Your daily message volume is low and manual.
  • You don't need automation, CRM or broadcasts to big lists.
  • Budget is zero and a phone screen is enough.

Choose the Business API if…

  • Multiple agents answer customers at once.
  • You want a chatbot to handle FAQs, qualify leads or book meetings.
  • You send automated order, delivery or appointment notifications.
  • You run marketing broadcasts and want analytics on them.
  • You need WhatsApp connected to your CRM and store.

Rule of thumb: If a human is tapping every reply, the app is fine. The moment you want software to send, route or automate messages — or more than a couple of people sharing one number — you need the API.

The migration question

A single phone number can only live on one WhatsApp product at a time. Moving a number to the API removes it from the consumer or Business app, and chat history doesn't transfer. Many businesses keep a separate number for the API and retire the old app number gradually.

Best practice: Before migrating, export any critical contacts and set expectations with customers. With Whatapi you can run a website chat widget and a WhatsApp number together so no lead slips through during the switch.

Where Whatapi makes the API easy

The main reason businesses hesitate on the API is complexity. Whatapi removes it: guided onboarding to a verified WABA, a no-code Bot Builder, shared inbox for your whole team, and built-in CRM — so the API feels as simple as the app but scales like enterprise software.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the Business App and API on the same number?

No. A number is active on only one WhatsApp product at a time.

Is the API worth it for a small business?

If you need automation, multiple agents or broadcasts, yes — even small teams benefit. If not, the free app is enough.

Will I lose my chats when migrating to the API?

Chat history doesn't transfer to the API, so plan the switch and back up key information first.

Does the API give me a verified green tick automatically?

No, but being on the API makes you eligible to apply for it. See our guide to the WhatsApp green tick.
